I was also told that Wolfe expects a lot from his readers by forcing them to go through classical mythology, and that once you get through that, the payoffs are huge. I was told that the setting and world are quite esoteric, but I didn't find them that bad it's basically just Vance's "Dying Earth" setting. Thing is, I'm having difficulty understanding why people like this book so much, and I don't think I'm having the issues I was told I might. But I know it's considered one of SF&F's great classics, and I know Neil Gaiman (one of my favourite authors) swears by this series, so this week I finally bit the bullet, started over, and finished this first book. Okay, to start off, I've tried reading this book several times and always dropped it after a couple chapters. ![]()
